1) Who is eligible for a special homestead?
Persons over 65 years of age or persons who are totally and permanently disabled.

2) How do I apply for an over 65 exemption?
Complete a special homestead application and bring or send documentation verifying your age. (i.e. drivers license. Download and print this application:

Complete a special homestead application and an affidavit signed by your doctor. Download and print these documents:

4) How much of an exemption will I receive?
For persons over 65 whose adjusted income (as reflected on the latest State Income Tax Return) is less than $12,000, the exemption is for the total assessed value of state taxes, and up to $5,000 of the assessed value of county taxes.
For persons over age 65 whose annual taxable income (as reflected on the latest Federal Income Tax Return) is less than $7,500 or those who are totally and permanently disabled, regardless of income, the exemption is total and complete with no taxes due.
For persons over 65 whose adjusted gross income (as reflected on the latest State Income Tax Return) is over $12,000, the exemption is for the total assessed value of state tax and up to $2,000 in assessed value of county taxes.
It is important to remember that these exemptions are on your homestead property only and up to 160 acres.

5) How often must I reapply?
Special homesteads must be claimed annually. Once you receive a special homestead exemption, you are sent an application by mail each year to complete. Failure to return the application will result in your Special Homestead Exemption being removed.
